Macmillan Cancer Support is a UK based charity that improves the lives of people,

affected by cancer and provides practical, medical, emotional and financial support

and pushes for better cancer care. One in three will get cancer and in Somerset alone,

2,800 people are diagnosed every year.

The charity relies on supporters for 99% of our income and this is raised in a variety

of different ways such as legacies, direct marketing and other voluntary giving such

as fundraising events and working with corporate partners.

In Somerset, there are 21 Macmillan health and social care professionals working in

hospitals providing expert care and support to people affected by cancer that all have

been funded by our generous supporters. These professionals include specialist nurses,

radiographers, a dietician and an information support manager. Most recently, the charity

have been raising money for a clinical oncologist and a speech and language therapist

based at Taunton Hospital along with a genetic nurse, whose work includes screening

individuals to find out if they carry genes for certain known genetic cancers, such as

breast cancer and providing patients with advice and counseling.

Having cancer can bring extra financial costs such as more heating and new clothes, hospital

parking and travel expenses. Last year, Macmillan gave over £51,000 in grants to people

throughout the county to help make a difference and hope to help even more people in 2007.

The charity are also continuing to fund the Macmillan CancerLine, which provides free

information and emotional support to people living with cancer, their family, friends and

carers and to hep them find a way through the maze of cancer information and support in the

UK.. The hours of the freephone have recently been extended and it is now open

Monday – Friday, 9am to 10pm. The specialist advisers help to identify what information you

need and which organisation can best provide it.
